Develop a Deathbed Mentality
Sorry to bring up death in the title yet you and I both come with an expiration date. Like it or not, we’ll all end up as dust. Soon or late.
I’ve yet to read an obituary that says “he died peacefully surrounded by his banker, his stockbroker, and his accountant.”
No, the good ones all speak of being close to loved ones and of the impact the deceased had on the world around them.
It’ll help you identify what truly counts. So you can strip out the trivialities. And lead your most majestic life. Beginning (hopefully) today. Because now is a gorgeous time to start a better way.
In my latest book The Wealth Money Can’t Buy, I share a model that has been transformational for my clients called “The 8 Forms of Wealth.” I believe that while money and financial security is a form of wealth, there are 7 other forms of riches that include personal growth, health and wellness, adventure and curiosity and family plus friends. Without experiencing all of these we miss out on knowing our richest life. Go ahead and read it here.

When I turned 40, I developed a curious ritual and I started reading obituaries. I'd read them every morning. And I must tell you, in all of those obituaries that I read, of the lives well lived, I never read one obituary that said, "He died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his accountant, his lawyer, and his golf partner." In each of the obituaries that I read of lives gorgeously lived, they all said more or less the same thing, "They died peacefully in their sleep, surrounded by the neighbors who appreciated her, the coworkers who respected her, and the family who loved her." And if that's going to matter most at the end, please make it matter most right now. I have personally witnessed so many so-called successful titans of business, of entrepreneurship, of finance, who have everything the world calls success, and they have nothing. They are empty souls. Their children won't talk to them. They are all alone in the mansion. There are so many people who have a lot of money and they are cash rich and they're life poor. Don't let that happen to you. I just had a wonderful phone call the other day with my father, and we laughed and we talked, and it was the wealth money can't buy. I am so close not only with my father but with my mother. I adore my family and I really feel the relationship that I have with my parents and with Elle and with my children and with all of my family members is so incredibly rich. It's a currency that money can't buy.
